Pipeline attacks: NSCDC combs Bayelsa creeks for militants
The Nigerian Security and Civil
Defence Corps, Bayelsa State
Command, on Friday, launched a
manhunt for militants that attacked
crude oil pipelines in the state.
The State Commandant, NSCDC, Mr.
Desmond Agu, who confirmed attacks
on oil pipelines operated by Nigerian
Agip Oil Company, said the corps had
deployed some operatives in the
creeks of Bayelsa.
The new militant group in the Niger
Delta, the Niger Delta Avengers, has
claimed responsibility for attack on
Agip’s Ogboinbiri-Tebidaba and Clough
Creek-Tebidaba Crude Oil pipelines in
Bayelsa on Thursday.
Explaining further, Agu said, “The
pipelines located within Agip’s oilfields
were attacked. We got the reports that
the pipelines were attacked when they
had been shut down, so there is no
loss of crude or leaks.
“We have dispatched our men and we
have intensified patrols in the area. We
are working round the clock to protect
critical infrastructure in Bayelsa.”
A new militant group, Niger Delta
Avengers, had claimed responsibility
for the incident in a message from the
group’s twitter handle on Thursday.
Eni, parent company of Agip has yet
to respond to an email requesting its
reaction to the attack..
Effort to get reaction of spokesman for
the Joint Military Force, Operation Pulo
Shield, Col. Isa Ado, was not
successful as his mobile phone did not
connect.
